Rhinoplasty Q & A

by Tarik M. Husain, MD, FACS

What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, also known as a nose job, is a surgical procedure of the nose. Its primary goal is to improve the proportions of your nose to balance your facial features.

Dr. Husain also performs rhinoplasty on patients with a deviated septum, a deformity of the cartilage that separates your nostrils, to improve their breathing.

What can rhinoplasty fix?

With rhinoplasty, Dr. Husain can address any concerns you may have about your nose, including:

  • Size (too big or too small)
  • Bump on the bridge
  • Wide bridge
  • Large nostrils
  • Odd-shaped tip of the nose
  • Imbalance

How is rhinoplasty performed?

Each rhinoplasty Dr. Husain performs is different. Like your fingerprints, your nose and face are specific to you. He considers all of these factors when developing his surgical plan.

Because rhinoplasty is a major surgery, you receive anesthesia to ensure your comfort. Then, Dr. Husain makes an incision to access the structures of your nose. Depending on the plans for your surgery, he’ll restructure your nose to improve its aesthetics.

He may need to remove cartilage or graft cartilage from other areas of your body, such as your ear or rib, to create the right look. If he’s fixing a deviated septum, Dr. Husain moves the cartilage into place to improve your breathing.

Once he’s done creating the right shape, Dr. Husain sutures the incision.

How long is the recovery process after rhinoplasty?

It can take up to a year for you to completely recover from rhinoplasty. The lengthy recovery time is primarily due to the healing of the reset bones.

Immediately following surgery, Dr. Husain uses splints and gauze to pack your nose and hold the bones in place. It may take a few weeks for the bruising and swelling to go down, although you may continue to experience swelling throughout the year as the bones settle into place.

The change is gradual, but over time as healing progresses, you may notice the subtle differences in your nose and the symmetry Dr. Husain created.
