Liposuction Q & A

by Tarik M. Husain, MD, FACS

What is liposuction?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure in which Dr. Husain removes fat deposits and resculpts target areas with more desirable contours. Popular liposuction treatment areas include:

  • Midsection
  • Upper thighs
  • Inner knees
  • Calves and ankles
  • Chest
  • Back
  • Buttocks
  • Upper arms
  • Chin and neck

Many patients choose to undergo other complementary procedures along with liposuction, including facelifts and tummy tucks.

Is liposuction right for me?

Liposuction is meant to address problem areas on the body that don’t respond to diet and exercise, as a complementary solution alongside a healthy lifestyle. Liposuctions isn’t a weight loss solution or an alternative to proper fitness and nutrition.

The best candidates for liposuction are adults within 30% of their ideal body weight who have adequate skin elasticity and muscle tone. The customized procedure isn’t an appropriate treatment for cellulite or loose, saggy skin.

Surgery is most suitable for men and women who don’t smoke or have any medical conditions that could interfere with recovery. Dr. Husain assesses your reason, goals, and outlook for the procedure to make sure they align with the predicted outcome.

What happens during liposuction?

First, an anesthesiologist administers local or general anesthesia to prepare you for surgery. Dr. Husain may also recommend IV sedation for your comfort.

Next, Dr. Husain makes an inconspicuous incision and inserts a thin tube called a cannula through the incision. He treats and loosens your fat deposits and subsequently suctions the fat out.

If you’re having other procedures done at the same time, Dr. Husain completes them as well. Once Dr. Husain achieves the desired result, he closes your incision with sutures, dresses the wound, and brings you to a recovery room for an overnight stay.

What can I expect after liposuction?

Swelling, tenderness, and fluid buildup are common after liposuction, so you won’t notice your results until those side effects subside. As your body heals and your skin shrinks over the next few days, you should begin to see an improved appearance.

Dr. Husain provides detailed aftercare instructions and helps ensure your comfort with pain management strategies while you recover. You may have to wear a compression garment around the treatment area for a certain amount of time to hold your skin in position, and you’ll receive instructions about when you can return to your normal activities.
