Brazilian Butt Lift Q & A

by Tarik M. Husain, MD, FACS

What is a Brazilian butt lift?

A Brazilian butt lift is a surgical procedure that enhances the size of your buttocks with a transfer of fat from another part of your body. Dr. Husain enhances not only the size of your buttocks but their shape as well. He can also contour the areas of your body where the fat was removed, usually the waist or thighs.

The Brazilian butt lift is one of the most popular procedures that Dr. Husain offers, and unlike some other cosmetic procedures, it can be performed on any body type.

How is a Brazilian butt lift performed?

As a major surgery that involves two separate procedures, liposuction and augmentation, Dr. Husain performs the Brazilian butt lift while you’re under general anesthesia.

To start, Dr. Husain uses a cannula to break up and remove the fat from your thighs or waist. While removing the fat, he also shapes the area to improve its overall appearance. In many cases, he removes up to three times more fat than what’s used to enhance the shape of the buttocks.

After removing the fat, Dr. Husain uses a special cannula outfitted with a needle to inject small amounts of fat in several areas of your buttocks. To enhance the shape, Dr. Husain may also include some liposuction in certain areas of your buttocks.

What happens after a Brazilian butt lift?

Immediately following surgery, you may feel sore and notice bruising in the areas where Dr. Husain extracted fat, as well as where he injected it. It may take up to two days before you can walk.

The most important thing Dr. Husain recommends following a Brazilian butt lift is to not sit on your butt for eight weeks; if you must sit, use a special medical inflatable pillow. Sitting can impair blood circulation to the fat that was transferred to your butt, which may affect cell stability.

Dr. Husain also recommends wearing a compression garment for eight weeks in the areas where he performed the liposuction. The special garment assists with pain control and helps your skin retract into place.
