Blepharoplasty Q & A

What is blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is an eyelid surgery that improves the appearance of the lid and the area around the eye. It may involve surgery of the upper lid, lower lid, or both.

Am I a good candidate for blepharoplasty?

Dr. Husain may recommend blepharoplasty to improve eyelid function and eyesight. The surgery is also performed for cosmetic purposes, to open the eye and provide a more youthful appearance.

While blepharoplasty is a relatively simple procedure, it’s not for everyone. If Dr. Husain discovers that your droopy eyelids are due to stretching of the upper lid -- a medical condition called ptosis -- he may recommend a different surgery.

Good candidates for blepharoplasty should also be nonsmokers in good health.

How is blepharoplasty performed?

For your comfort, Dr. Husain performs blepharoplasty while you are under general anesthesia.

For the upper lids, Dr. Husain makes the incision along the crease of your eyelid to minimize scar exposure. He repositions the fat under your eyelid to improve your appearance and removes any excess fat and skin. Finally, he completes the procedure with small sutures along the incision line.

For a lower lid procedure, Dr. Husain makes the incision along lash and laugh lines. He removes excess fat, skin, and muscle, then tightens and sutures the lid.

How long is the recovery from blepharoplasty?

It may take up to three months to completely heal from blepharoplasty and to see a significant change in your appearance, but you should be able to venture out of the house within two weeks.

Immediately following the surgery, Dr. Husain may cover your eyes to protect the incision sites. It’s not necessary to keep your eyes covered, however, and you can take the bandages off once you get home. Dr. Husain may prescribe eye drops or ointment to keep your eyes moist as the lids heal.

Blepharoplasty can permanently correct saggy eyelids, but it doesn’t stop the hands of time. To improve the longevity of the procedure, wear sun-protective eyewear to protect the lids.

Whether your saggy eyelids are affecting your sight or you just want to look your age — or younger — call Dr. Husain’s office or book an appointment online to discuss whether blepharoplasty is an option for you.
